Thesis Prize for Innovations in Health Care

Process optimalisation in health care is high on the priority list at the University of Twente. In 2008, researchers at the UT, the Mama Care Centre (at the Twente Medical Spectrum), and the Integral Cancer Centre Northeast (IKNO) had already concluded that women with breast cancer were better served by having individual post-treatment checks. Even now, the standard practice is 'for five years and twice a year'. Jesse van Eltern's dissertation showed that the standard level of post-treatment screening was unnecessary for older patients and for patients with a positive prognosis. This is good news for patients; they can look forward to fewer and less frequent checks and the anxiety associated with post-treatment testing. The individual approach is also good news for hospitals. Van Elteren's thesis describing the cost-effectiveness of follow-up scenarios was very popular with the jury of Innovations in Health Care. The relevancy and structure of the research won him the 2009 Thesis Prize.

Peter Boorsma

Launch of the Master of Risk Management

Peter Boorsma will be 65 years old in July. For this pioneering professor, however, that's no reason to say goodbye. Since the summer of 2009, Boorsma has been officially working one day per week (0.2 fte). But, that wasn't quite enough for the former politician. Prior to his 'retirement' in January of last year, he launched the new Master of Risk Management. Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven gave the inaugural seminar. "This is the first academic-level risk management programme. I'm proud that we have been able to achieve this." Aside from being its creator, Boorsma is the academic director of the two-year academic programme. Aside from these duties, he also guides students and post-graduate researchers at the School . "Of course I'm less busy than before, but you'll still find me on campus two or three days per week.

Rezaul Kabir

Open Road Ahead for Corporate Finance

On August 1st he was appointed Professor of Corporate Finance and Risk Management. Professor Rezaul Kabir came to Twente via the University of Tilburg and the University of Stirling. "What's really nice about working at this School is the multi-disciplinary approach. At many universities I come into contact with business economist thinkers only. Very seldom do I come across Public Administration colleagues, even though there are real opportunities for collaboration." I also really like that I am teaching students who are studying something else entirely-- like engineering and technology-- what to look out for in order to finance a company. The fact that I'm the only one working in my area at the UT increases the challenge of making Corporate Finance and Risk Management as attractive as possible. In terms of research, I also see potential in the innovative nature of Twente. For example, how can you bring a better financial product to market using technology? I'm not going to be idle here, not for one second."
