'Regulation, Europe & Innovation' (REI) is the core theme of the research done by the LEGS department. Within this theme the current focus is on the regulation of emerging technologies (with a special focus on nanotechnology and including aspects of intellectual property rights (IPR) and regulation by means of standardization), on (smart regulation) for dynamic policy areas (in casu financial markets and the energy sector) and on EU2020, regional innovation and demographic shrinkage.

These topics serve as a link with the Institute for Innovation and Governance Studies (IGS). Most LEGS staff members participate in IGS's Strategic Research Orientation on the Innovation of Governance. The department is involved in the educational programmes of Business Administration, Public Administration, European Studies and Health Sciences. Additionally, LEGS provides post-academic education with the Master of Public Management, the Master of Risk Management and the Master of Environmental and Energy Management.

Professorships at LEGS include: General Economics/European Economic Governance, Public Governance Law, Business Law, Law of the EU and other international organisations.
