Marc Zinck Stagno is currently finishing his Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering & Management and beginning a Master's degree in Business Administration, with a specialisation in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. "I completed my Bachelor's thesis on the potentials of social media for the marketing of universities, in 2010. It was well-received and I was selected to present the results at the Student Research Conference 2010 in Leiden. The magazine Quest also showed an interest by writing an article about my research. Additionally, my supervisor, Dr. Efthymios Constantinides, and I are currently preparing a paper for publication based on this work. Writing the thesis really made me realise that I like doing research. The University of Twente also provides an ideal setting for this because relations are quite informal and researchers and employees are very eager to help. After completing my Master's thesis, I hope to stay at the University of Twente and to continue doing research for a Ph.D. degree."
Martijn van Andel began as a consultant for Tibbe Company after graduating from the Industrial Engineering and Management programme in 2009. In 2010 his work concerned improvement projects in healthcare and educational organisations. Martijn performs process analysis and process improvements on various issues in these businesses: "Many of my assignments are on socially 'hot' topics, like how to prevent school drop-outs through better educational processes, and how to reduce queuing time for healthcare organisations." In addition to this work, 2010 was also the year he organised a mental healthcare benchmarking project. Industrial Engineering and Management prepared him well for the job: "I've always been interested in finding solutions to make new things possible. Industrial Engineering and Management taught me how to quickly find possibilities for improvement, and how to quantify them." One of Martijn's goals is to use his process and information knowledge even more extensively: "In future years I'll focus on creating tools and software to analyse and control business processes. Information is everywhere; what is important nowadays is what you do with it."
"Keep close contact with alumni for an effective education"
Marco Bom studied Industrial Engineering and Management (process technology) and has headed his own consultancy, Audit orde BV, for the last five years. Every day he guides organisations to higher levels of quality, in terms of client satisfaction and continuous improvements, as well as assisting clients with risk management, particularly in the areas of information security, business continuity and operational and regulatory compliance. "The course was well-matched to the daily challenges that I now face. The knowledge and expertise that I gained at the University of Twente are continually in use. In practice, the course is management orientated, and with the rise of new countries, concepts and the internet, it has also changed radically. I will be interested in seeing how the programme continues to address these changes." Within the Advisory Board of Practitioners, I contribute my broad management and experience in the field on issues relating to aligning the curriculum with practice. In addition, as member of Bekader, I represent the voice of the alumni on the Board. Bekader is an active association in which the members network, share experiences and observe developments of the University. We think it is essential that Bekader participate in the Advisory Board of Practitioners, and are continuing our work to intensify the relationship between the alumni and the SMG Faculty.
